To control the system I decided to use a universal remote control with the very popular IRman device. For anyone who is unaware the IRman is a device that connects to a PC's serial port and reads IR streams sent from remote control units. The streams are converted into sets of six byte codes and sent down the serial line to the PC. Therefore you can use software to control operations on your PC with an IR remote. The IRman has been mounted where the cars ash tray used to be located behind a black panel cut the same shape as the face of the ash tray from a sheet of 3MM MDF. Not too obvious and receives the IR signals great in this location.

The remote control used is a thin universal remote control, about the thickness of four credit cards. It is a perfect size for in the car and has more than enough buttons for the functions it needs to control. Distance is good on the remote too, I can control the system quite easily from outside the vehicle if needed.
